New York City's newest tourist attraction is "The Vessel" at the new Hudson Yards real estate development.
This extraordinary centerpiece of Hudson Yards is its spiral staircase, a soaring new landmark meant to be climbed. This interactive artwork was imagined by Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio as a focal point where people can enjoy new perspectives of the city and one another from different heights, angles and vantage points.
Comprised of 154 intricately interconnecting flights of stairs -- almost 2,500 individual steps and 80 landings – the nearly one mile of vertical climb offers remarkable views of the city, the river and beyond.
I finally got my chance to climb The Vessel. My first two tickets were rained out but finally nice weather. I took my time, rested frequently and made it to the top. So much fun and excitement and amazement. And a great picture wherever you looked.
In this image taken almost at the top you can see the wonderful geometric symmetry of the structure. In the lower right hand quarter of the image you can see a circle which is located at the exact center of the structure. This is the the most popular spot for visitors other than perhaps the top. It allows you to use your cell phone or articulating viewfinder of a camera to point skyward and hopefully get a perfect picture of the opening in the roof. I wasn't able to get that perfect picture because the crowd was intense and I was constantly being pushed off center. Maybe next time.
