Description
The City of Arts and Sciences is a cultural and architectural complex in the city of Valencia, Spain. It is the most important modern tourist destination in the city of Valencia and one of the 12 Treasures of Spain.
The City of Arts and Sciences is situated at the end of the former riverbed of the river Turia, which was drained and rerouted after a catastrophic flood in 1957. The old riverbed was turned into a picturesque sunken park.
Designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela, the project began the first stages of construction in July 1996, and was inaugurated on April 16, 1998 with the opening of L'Hemisfèric. The last major component of the City of Arts and Sciences, El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, was inaugurated on October 9, 2005, Valencian Community Day.
I love architecture that begs the question, "Is it sculpture or a building or both." These buildings are both in my opinion. My jaw dropped when I saw them for the first time in gleaming sunlight. Unfortunately, my camera had stopped working so I had to go into business are of Valencia and purchase a new camera so I could take pictures the last 2 days of the trip. Because I had to charge the new battery for 4 hours I couldn't get back for daylight images but I got up at 6:00 am and walked over for some sunrise images which you see here.
Here we see on the right the El Museu de les Ciències PrÃncipe Felipe (2000). In the middle is the reflecting pool with sculptures which are on temporary display until 11/19. At the rear of the image we see the L'Hemisfèric (1998) — an IMAX Cinema, planetarium and laserium and El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia (2005) — an opera house and performing arts center dedicated to music and the performing arts .
