Description
1931 Dusenberg Model J Tourster Derham Front Grill by Allen Beatty
A 1931 Dusenberg Model J Tourster Derham featuring the elegant front grill. One of the classic cars displayed at the first annual Edison Concours d'Elegance held in West Orange, New Jersey. A Concours d'Elegance (from French meaning a competition of elegance referring to the gathering of prestigious cars) dates back to 17th Century French aristocracy, who paraded horse-drawn carriages in the parks of Paris during Summer weekends and holidays. Over time, carriages became horseless and the gatherings became a competition among automobile owners to be judged on the appearance of their automobiles.
Traditionally, vehicle judging at a Concours d'Elegance is more demanding than that of a neighborhood or general automobile show. Trained judges examine the vehicle thoroughly. They rate each and every component. Only those vehicles that are judged perfect (or very nearly so) in every way, are considered eligible for trophy class. A Concours d'Elegance show features only the best of the best.
The Duesenberg, one of just eight examples built, boasts its original Gordon Buehrig-styled body, as well as the original chassis and original 420-cu.in. straight-eight engine. Throughout its history, chassis 2464 (fitted with engine J-448) has been sprayed in black and in gold over black, but its current cream-colored hue does an exemplary job of highlighting the car's timeless lines. No stranger to the show circuit, the Duesenberg, owned by Joseph and Margie Cassini, III, of West Orange, New Jersey, earned best in class honors at the 2012 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, and was nominated for best of show (after taking the Duesenberg class win) at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
