Description
Rings of monuments--of solemn remembrance and patriotic defiance--radiate out from NYC's Ground Zero. These memorials, created in the commuter towns and rail stops where people never returned are not part of any broad, cordinated effort. Some towns erected ad hoc monuments immediately, while others took several years to reach concensus on proper tribute to the tragedy.
Here we see the National Nine Eleven Memorial located at Ground Zero.
The 9/11 Memorial opened on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. It consists of two pools set in the footprints of the original Twin Towers where the towers used to stand. Thirty foot waterfalls cascade into pools, each then descending into a center void. The names of the victims are inscribed in bronze parapets around the pools. The names of the victims are grouped according to how or where they died.
